Full Abdominoplasty - Mini Abdominoplasty Plastic Surgery
The procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen for women and men
The best candidates for tummy tuck - abdominoplasty are emotionally stable men and women who are in relatively good shape, close to their ideal body weight, and who have good overall skin elasticity, but are bothered by a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won’t respond to diet or exercise. It is major invasive surgery which removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen. It also tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall.
Abdominoplasties for Women
The plastic surgery is particularly helpful to women who have lost elasticity in the muscles and skin of the abdomen due to multiple pregnancies. Loss of skin elasticity in older patients because of weight loss can also be improved. Abdominoplasty is not a “one size fits all” procedure; it is unique for each patient. Much depends upon the joint decisions made by the patient and his or her surgeon. Patients who plan to lose a lot of weight should postpone tummy tuck until after they have achieved their desired weight. Young women who plan future pregnancies should also wait with tummy tuck, since vertical muscles in the abdomen, which are tightened during surgery, can separate during pregnancy.
Abdominoplasties for Men
In general men's unwanted fatty deposits are most commonly over the abdomen and the flanks or 'love handles'. They tend to increase with age and just about every man has them to some extent. Big or small, reduction of these areas will make a huge improvement to shape. There is less excess to hang over the belt and the improvement in profile when you stand in front of the mirror can be dramatic.
TYPES OF ABDOMINOPLASTIES
There are two different types of abdominoplasties: the “mini-abdominoplasty”, and the more invasive type, “full abdominoplasty”. Both these surgeries may involve liposuction. In both surgeries skin and fat are cut away from the abdomen. In a mini-abdominoplasty an incision is made just above the pubic area; fat and excess skin is removed from the middle and lower abdomen. The navel is pulled lower to compensate for the stretching and removing of skin. Minimal or no abdominal tightening will be required. Recovery time is usually very quick. A full tummy tuck - abdominoplasty requires a much larger incision. Skin is separated from the abdominal wall, all the way up to the ribs. Muscles are sewn together to tighten them, and a significant amount of skin is removed, requiring the patient to be bent over for 10 to 14 days.
Often liposculpture of the abdomen can be combined with treatment of the hips and waist and the size of the whole torso is reduced, creating a waist, getting rid of that square look and giving the whole central section a real rejuvenation.

Possible risks and complications
Abdominoplasty is a major invasive surgery. When performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, one trained in body contouring, the results are normally more than satisfactory. However, as with all surgical procedures, there are some risks associated with abdominoplasty. There are also specific complications associated with abdominoplasy. These include: infection, blood clots, and poor healing, which can result in heavy scarring. Infection can be treated with antibiotics and drainage. The risk of blood clots can be minimized by moving around as soon after surgery as is possible. Poor healing and scarring may require additional surgery. You can reduce your risks by closely following your surgeon's instructions both before and after surgery. The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can only be determined at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk.
In an abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, an incision is made in the abdomen (usually from hip bone to hip bone). Excess skin and fat is removed. The muscles may be tightened. The navel will be placed into the proper position, and the major incision closed beneath it.
After the tummy tuck surgery you may be swollen and in pain, which can be controlled by medication. Depending upon the type of surgery performed, you may be released within a few hours, or remain hospitalized for up to 3 days. Your doctor will give you instructions in your post-operative care. If you feel any severe pain, call your surgeon immediately. Most of the swelling and bruising should disappear within two weeks or so. (Some subtle swelling-unnoticeable to anyone but you and your surgeon-will remain for several months.) There should be no lifting or pushing, putting strain on the stomach muscles, for up to 2 months. A full abdominoplasty produces a permanent large scar, which can extend from hip to hip, depending upon the extent of the procedure. Your surgeon will let you know when you are ready for exercise. During your healing period avoid drinking alcohol, which can lead to fluid retention and delay recovery.
Abdominoplaty can make a remarkable difference in the appearance of the siluette, especially when the procedures combined with lipocuction . The degree of improvement varies from patient to patient. In most cases, abdominoplasty is successful in providing a trimmer abdominal contour in patients with excess skin and fat and weak abdominal muscles. A number of factors will influence how long the optimal results of abdominoplasty will last, including age, skin elasticity, and physical fitness. Generally, however, good results will be long-lasting if the patient remains in good health, maintains a stable weight, and exercises regularly. One study surveying patient satisfaction following abdominoplasty indicated that 95% felt their symptoms (excess skin and fat) were improved, 86% were satisfied with the results of the surgery, and 86% would recommend the procedure to a friend.
