FAQ - Eye Surgery Budapest

Q, What is the best age for having eyelid cosmetic surgery?
There is no age limit for eyelid cosmetic surgery. There are two age groups that typically seek eyelid surgery. The first are people who develop excess skin and fat on their eyelids in their teens or childhood. This population usually has the surgery in their early twenties. The second group experiences eyelid changes as a result of aging; they start coming in for surgery in their midthirties. Usually a more youthful look is maintained when eyelid cosmetic surgery is performed on a younger patient whereas in the older patient a more dramatic change is can be achieved.

The best candidates for eyelid cosmetic surgery are men and women who are physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic about their expectations. Most are in their mid-thirties or older, but if droopy, baggy eyelids run in your family you may decide to have eyelid cosmetic surgery at a younger age. Eyelid surgery continues to be sought by people all the way into their seventies, even their eighties.

Q. Can eyelid surgery get rid of my "crow's feet"?
Eyelid surgery is not effective against crow's feet, also known as laugh lines. These "dynamic wrinkles" at the outer corners of the eyes are produced by contraction of underlying muscle—as opposed to static wrinkles that form on sagging skin. B0t0x cosmetic treatment can solve the problem of the crow feet.

Q. Can hooded eyelids obstruct vision?
Yes. Severe hooding of the upper eyelids can obstruct peripheral vision and reduce your range of upward vision.

Q. How long it will last the effect after the eyelid cosmetic surgery?
The eyelid surgery will last for years (up to 10 years). Your eyes will look fresh and with a smoother improved eyelid contour. After the eyelid cosmetic surgery everyone will look more alert and youthful.

Q. What Causes Eyelid Puffiness?
  • Puffiness or swelling about the eyelids is produced by any one or more of three possible factors: Weakened eyelid muscles (the orbicularis muscles) allow the orbital fat to billow forward under the influence of gravity. This produces puffiness of the eyelids which is constantly present, but can be made to disappear by standing in front of a mirror and contracting your eyelid muscles such as in squinting. The problem can be surgically corrected by tightening the muscle in the outer corner of the lower eyelid (a procedure known as canthoplasty).
  • Excessive fatty deposits about the eyeball produce bulges or bagginess. Removing the excessive fat or strengthening the retaining skin and muscle corrects this problem.
  • Excessive fluid accumulation about the eyes. This occurs commonly as a result of allergy and is usually worse on getting up in the mornings and improves as the day goes on - with the redistribution of body fluids on rising from the recumbent to the erect posture. Fluid accumulation is not corrected by surgery and if present may lead to a more protracted post surgery recovery. Some morning swelling can be expected in all patients for some variable time after eyelid surgery.
Q. Can cosmetic surgery get rid of the dark circles under my eyes?
If the circles are actually shadows cast by sagging lower eyelids, a lower eyelid-lift can correct the problem.

If the circles are dark pigmentation of the skin, your options are using skin-bleaching creams containing hydroquinones, or a light chemical skin Bleaching cream must he applied twice daily for several months before an improvement can be seen.

Circles also may result from very thin, translucent skin. In this situation, the reddish/purplish hue is caused by blood vessels and muscle just below the skin The only remedy here is to hide your dark circles with makeup. A careful examination by a plastic surgeon can usually pinpoint the source of the dark circles.

Q. Does eyelid cosmetic surgery affect vision?
Most patients find their vision not affected, some people find they are blurry for a few days. The eyes can be mildly sore, lightly dry in some cases. Depending on theeyelid cosmetic surgery, ointments or eye drops may be used in the eye to help protect them.

Q. How Will I Look immediately after the surgery ?
Bruising and swelling obviously varies from person to person. It is worst in the two-three days and then will be healed seven to fourteen days.

Q. Are the incisions noticeable?
The final quality of any scars is mainly depend on the thickness of the skin. The eyelids have the thinnest skin in the body and therefore the scars will healed more quickly and hardly notoeble than anywhere else. The upper eyelid incision hides very well in the eyelid groove above the eye. Sometimes the outer edge is faintly visible under the eyebrow. This is usually most noticeable in the first two months after surgery and what seems a little obvious will often settle down and fade greatly over time to a thin, nearly invisible white line. Women can use makeup to camouflage this area. It is very rare that this area will need revision cosmetic surgery at four months to flatten it out.

Q. Can asymmetry be a problem after cosmetic eyelid surgery?
Any operation on the face where there is a procedure done on each side can result in some asymmetry. Usually the asymmetry is mild. Most people have some degree of asymmetry prior to cosmetic surgery. During surgery Dr Rodrigo will attempt to correct any such asymmetries. Most people have asymmetries, which do not cause distraction or attention. Perfect geometrical symmetry is in fact considered as unnatural, plastic and artificial.

Q. When do I get back to normal after an eyelid cosmetic surgery?
You should be able to read or watch television after two or three days.

Q. When can I wear glasses?
Patients can wear glasses immediately after eyelid cosmetic surgery.

Q. When can I wear contact lenses?
Contact lenses can be worn one week after upper eyelid cosmetic surgery - blepharoplasty - and two weeks after lower eyelid blepharoplasty, and even then they may feel uncomfortable for a while.

Q. Is it a painful procedure to have an eyelid cosmetic surgery?
Every person have very different thresholds at which they perceive pain. Your eyelids may feel tight and sore as the anaesthesia wears off, but any associated pain is usually mild and should easily be relieved by mild analgesics such as Panado. Dr Rodrigo will ensure that you have prescriptions for postoperative pain relief before leaving the clinic.

Can eyelid cosmetic surgery be combined with a brow-lift or facelift cosmetic surgery?
Yes. In fact, some cases, it might appear that the upper lids are sagging because there is too much skin when the real problem is a sagging brow. If both the brow and lids are too lax, the best solution is having a combination brow-lift and eyelid-lift. Proper diagnosis is critical to a satisfactory result.

Even more common is having eyelid surgery in conjunction with a face-lift since a face-lift alone will not affect the appearance of the lids. The advantage to having multiple procedures in one operation is a shorter recovery period and less "down time" because your bruises and incisions heal simultaneously. The disadvantage is an increased risk of complications such as bleeding.
