Preparation for Surgery |
Preparations Before Cosmetic or Plastic Surgery
- Do not take aspirin, or aspirin like medications for two weeks prior to your surgery. This includes many anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen and herbal products like garlic, ginko biloba, and vitamin E.
- A diet low in sodium is very beneficial before and after any surgery.
- Drink plenty of water in the days prior to your surgery. This may help ward off nausea after your surgery which is usually due to anesthesia.
- If you smoke, quit smoking for at least 2 weeks before your plastic surgery and anticipate no smoking for the recovery. Cigarettes can have devastating effects on healing. Smoking greatly increases your risk of complications because nicotine reduces the oxygen levels in the blood, causes constriction of critical blood vessels to the skin which will delays healing, worsens scarring following operations where the skin has been undermined such as in a facelift, tummy tuck, breast reduction or breast lift. For some patients, smoking could lead to tissue death (necrosis).
- Fill prescriptions (especially pain medications) before surgery.
- Purchase any homeopathic medicines (i.e. Bromelain and Arnica Gel, for swelling and bruising) Be sure to discuss this with your surgeon. Prepare meals - consider: Protein shakes, soup, pudding, applesauce, yogurt, oatmeal, cottage cheese, juice. Think about low-sodium foods to reduce swelling.
- Set up “home” recovery area: lots of pillows, books, magazines, journal, stationery, lotion, baby wipes,tv, videos, remote control or phone near your bed.
- Prepare ice packs to reduce post-op swelling.
-
Mouthwash (you won't be able to brush your teeth for the first day or two) moisturizers, scar reducing/minimizing creams laxatives (pain medications are often binding.
- Eye Drops (after any surgery, eyes can be dry).
-
On the day of surgery, wear loose clothing which will be easy to get off and on after operation (a shirt that buttons in front).
- Follow your plastic surgeon's directions carefully regarding medications, eating & drinking, etc.

- If your plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery scheduled is for the afternoon you can eat a light (yoghurt or fruit) breakfast before 8.00. am
- Bring all medication, which you have taken or need to take
- Remove contact lenses
- Wear comfortable loose clothes
- Remove make-up from face, eyes, lips and neck.
- Remove nail polish from your fingers of the hand and feet.
- Remove ALL jewelry/piercings prior to cosmetic or plastic surgery.
Many people take herbal supplements these days however when taken in conjunction with anaesthesia they may be dangerous. Since many supplements are sold over the counter the patient may believe they are safe and don’t need to be disclosed to the surgeon or anaesthesiologist however this is a big mistake and can severely harm you during surgery. Just because many of these supplements are made from plants or herbs doesn’t mean they are safe when combined with anaesthesia but the patient must remember that many medicines and drugs are made from plants. Keep this in mind when a surgeon or anaesthesiologist asks you to disclose what types of supplements you are taking.Below is a list of common supplements and why they are dangerous when going for surgery.
Do not take any brand of aspirin, or any drugs for two weeks prior to and after surgery. Aspirin may stop blood clotting and this could cause difficulties after surgery. Tylenol may be taken to reduce fever and act as a pain reliever and is aspirin free. For smokers it is recommended not to smoke for at least two weeks before and after surgery and 3-4 weeks is ideal. Smoking reduces blood circulation which means a lack of oxygen for areas that need healing.
