Otoplasty - Ear Surgery Abroad

Protruding or lop ear deformity is a common malformation with a frequent occurring psychological disturbance. Children afflicted with this problem are often the object of ridicule from their peers. Even adults who suffer this problem are sometimes ridiculed by workmates or others in the community. Ears come in all shapes and sizes, however, protruding ears are frequently unsightly and can even lead to unhappiness with appearance and the inability to select certain hairstyles. Otoplasty surgery can be performed at any age after the ears have reached full size, usually around five to six years of age. Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery, which changes the appearance of person’s external ears. Otoplasty can do many tasks; it can bring the ears closer to head, reduce the size of very large ears or reshape the various bends in the cartilage.

Otoplasty - Ear Surgery BeforeOtoplasty After Surgery
Eear surgery will leave a faint scar in the back of the ear that will fade with time. Even when only one ear appears to protrude, surgery is usually performed on both ears for a better balance. Adults and children are usually up and around within a few hours of surgery.

The patient's head will be wrapped in a bulky bandage immediately following surgery to promote the best molding and healing. The ears may throb or ache a little for a few days, but this can be relieved by medication. Within a few days, the bulky bandages will be replaced by a lighter head dressing similar to a headband.

There are other types of ear problems which surgery can improve such as:

  • "lop ear" - when the tip seems to fold down and forward
  • "cupped ear" - which is usually a very small ear
  • and "shell ear" - when the curve in the outer rim as well as the natural folds and creases are missing

Ear surgery or otoplasty is intend to improve the appearance of the ears by setting prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. The result should look natural and enhance the balance between your ears and other facial features.Small incision is done in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. Surgeon will then sculpt the cartilage and bend it back toward the head. Non-removable stitches may be used to help maintain the new shape. After the surgery the ear or ears are heavily bandaged for a few days.
